This Andy Katz article has a bunch of juicy nuggets. It’s about how the three Wake Forest and two UNC players are getting along while trying out for the national junior team. Evidently, just before Katz published it, Rashad McCants was cut from the team. A pretty surprising cut, don’t you think? Justin Gray is…
This is a good read on Billy Jones, the first black basketball player in the ACC. Jones played at Maryland starting in 1965. It’s amazing how things have changed in the forty years since. Actually, you could have said the same thing 20 years ago.
Yoni at College Basketball has a guest columnist on his site with an interesting article on why high schoolers skipping college is good for the NBA. You may have heard about this same theory a few months back with Michael McCann first published his article. It got a lot of play in newspapers around the…
Yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle printed an article detailing claims from Marion Jones’ ex-husband CJ Hunter that she used several illegal performance-enhancing drugs during the 2000 Olympics. The claims came from a transcript of a testimony from Hunter to a federal investigator in the BALCO case. The testimony, just like previous testimony from Tim Montgomery,…
University of Florida linebacker Taurean Charles was arrested after trying to smash the head of a fellow student with a beer keg. Nice story. I wonder if FSU is worried. Florida and Miami seem to be pulling ahead in the recent arrests competition. Maybe FSU has too many pansy, momma’s boys on their team.
Whenever I get details like this about what college basketball recruiting entails, I’m amazed. Can this really be the best way? It sounds nuts to me. On the flip side, concentrating like this probably helps keep these guys from bothering kids all year long.
This is a nice article about a pro-am basketball league that Jeff McInnis has set up in Charlotte. McInnis has always come across as a bit of an ass, so it’s good to read about his good deeds. In appreciation, I won’t even make any Phil Ford or Charles Oakley jokes.
UNC is one step closer to approving permanant ads in the Dean Dome and at Fetzer Field. This article details all the hand wringing going on in Chapel Hill. Faculty Chairwoman Judith Wegner has expressed her concerns. Wegner used to be the dean of the law school, so I’m sure she knows the term “slippery…
This is actually pretty funny. The N&O asked some local ad agencies to come up with some new logos for the ACC (the old one with the string of contiguous states won’t work after BC joins next year). What they came up with is pretty nice. See if you can detect the thinly veiled synicism.
The marketing weasels around the ACC are working on how to best sell the league to the new schools and vice-versa. From the sound of things, it won’t be too tough at Virginia Tech, where they’ve been pressing their nose against the ACC’s front window for decades. At BC, it’ll be a little tougher, what…
