Dissecting the RPI

If you don’t check out Ken Pomeroy’s blog, you should. He uses a mastery of statistics to take some very interesting looks at college basketball. Over the past week or so, he wrote a series of three articles about the new RPI formula.
Ken’s conclusion, backed up with stats, is that it’s a whole lot of nuthin’. Adding in a bonus for road wins really does little to shake up the rankings. Further, since the RPI is only one tool that the selection committee uses, this small change will have basically no effect.
Ken does a particularly nice job of refuting Joe Lunardi’s claims of why this is so great.
You can read Ken’s posts here. Part 1. Part 2. Part 3.
