  • Same Pick, Different Day

    July 27, 2004
    Quick Links

The ACC media put out their preseason football picks and as was the case the previous twelve years, Floridsa State is their pick for first. They must have that part printed in ink. I guess Duke at #9 (or #11 now) is also written in permanent marker. The two new schools, Miami and Virginia Tech,…

  • Good Crop Of QBs

    July 26, 2004
    Quick Links

Even with the graduations of stars Philip Rivers and Matt Schaub (as well as Maryland’s Scott McBrien), the ACC is loaded with good QBs this year. Chris Rix of FSU and Brock Berlin of Miami will get the most national publicity, but Clemson’s Charlie Whithurst is probably the best in the league. Darian Durant of…

  • Friendly Rivals

    July 23, 2004
    Quick Links

This Andy Katz article has a bunch of juicy nuggets. It’s about how the three Wake Forest and two UNC players are getting along while trying out for the national junior team. Evidently, just before Katz published it, Rashad McCants was cut from the team. A pretty surprising cut, don’t you think? Justin Gray is…

  • Meeting Billy Jones

    July 23, 2004
    Quick Links

This is a good read on Billy Jones, the first black basketball player in the ACC. Jones played at Maryland starting in 1965. It’s amazing how things have changed in the forty years since. Actually, you could have said the same thing 20 years ago.

  • High Schoolers To NBA: Good

    July 23, 2004
    Quick Links

Yoni at College Basketball has a guest columnist on his site with an interesting article on why high schoolers skipping college is good for the NBA. You may have heard about this same theory a few months back with Michael McCann first published his article. It got a lot of play in newspapers around the…

  • More Red Flags

    July 23, 2004
    General

Yesterday, the San Francisco Chronicle printed an article detailing claims from Marion Jones’ ex-husband CJ Hunter that she used several illegal performance-enhancing drugs during the 2000 Olympics. The claims came from a transcript of a testimony from Hunter to a federal investigator in the BALCO case. The testimony, just like previous testimony from Tim Montgomery,…

  • Kegger!

    July 22, 2004
    Quick Links

University of Florida linebacker Taurean Charles was arrested after trying to smash the head of a fellow student with a beer keg. Nice story. I wonder if FSU is worried. Florida and Miami seem to be pulling ahead in the recent arrests competition. Maybe FSU has too many pansy, momma’s boys on their team.

  • Magical Mystery Recruiting Tour

    July 22, 2004
    Quick Links

Whenever I get details like this about what college basketball recruiting entails, I’m amazed. Can this really be the best way? It sounds nuts to me. On the flip side, concentrating like this probably helps keep these guys from bothering kids all year long.

  • McInnis League

    July 22, 2004
    Quick Links

This is a nice article about a pro-am basketball league that Jeff McInnis has set up in Charlotte. McInnis has always come across as a bit of an ass, so it’s good to read about his good deeds. In appreciation, I won’t even make any Phil Ford or Charles Oakley jokes.

  • The Hardees Dean Dome

    July 22, 2004
    Quick Links

UNC is one step closer to approving permanant ads in the Dean Dome and at Fetzer Field. This article details all the hand wringing going on in Chapel Hill. Faculty Chairwoman Judith Wegner has expressed her concerns. Wegner used to be the dean of the law school, so I’m sure she knows the term “slippery…
